Candle Ritual for our country and new President [Jan. 16th, 2009|07:05 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Location |Motown]
[Current Mood | hopeful]

I am reposting this from an email I received earlier today.  This is a cause that is quite important to me, and *hopefully* to many of you, as well.  Even if you don't agree with the country's selection for our new President, you should still agree that our country needs every bit of help it can get, if we are to move out of this recession/rut/pothole/whatever, and become prosperous once again.

NOTE: If you are not in the Detroit area, you can still participate!  There are blood donation and food donation locations throughout the country - find one near you, and contribute whatever you can!

Pagan Pride Detroit (PPD) has joined with representatives from our 2008 PPD Sponsors once again to offer you a National Service Day/Inauguration Ritual.

Practickal Magick, Crystal Pathways, FOCAS, Pagan Center, Motorcitypagans.net, OakMoon Coven & the Circle of the Sacred Grove are joining together to Embrace the Flames of Change in 2009. Starting with this Inauguration event, PPD will join up with groups all over the Metro Detroit Area to highlight the network of our pagan community.

More info on that to come in February so be on the lookout for updates to the 2009 Embracing the Flames of Change events.

Martin Luther King Day, over the past few years, has become a National Day of Service. In honor of that, President elect Obama, in conjunction with 1,000’s of organizations across the country, has put out a call for everyone do one act of community service on the 19th of January. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/17/obamas-call-for-national_n_151750.html

The 20th of January is Inauguration day; in honor of this moment in history, and in a unifying statement of self, please perform the Inauguration Candle Magick Ritual (or something similar), between noon on the 19th and noon on the 20th of January, before the swearing-in ceremony.

Candle Magick Ritual

1.       Things to gather –

a.    1 white candle with holder

b.    1 lighter or matches

c.      Oil for blessing (if you do not have something in mind for this, you can use household kitchen oil, baby oil, mineral oil or lotion/motor oil in a pinch)

d.      One teaspoon of dirt (from your yard, some place special or from a local park)

e.      all other items per your own magickal path- google a standard ritual set up if you so desire but it is totally unnecessary)

f.      review this ritual completely before starting – you can do a practice run if you would like just so you feel more comfortable, just read from the paper and go through the motions without doing the workings.

2.      Set up your sacred space per your own path or using your generic Inauguration Ritual below (this is a generic super easy beginner ritual geared for people with no experience and less, so feel free to modify)

3.        Talking parts are Italic and Bold

4.         Find location for small ritual (4 ft circle is room enough. Yes, the bathroom will work)

---START---

Clear the space

Grab a broom, most everyone has one, if not use a towel, or just sweep with your hands.

Stand at the front of your circle (East is the generic front for this ritual)

Draw energy: Imagine (will, push or pull) divine light (color is your choice if you are unsure white is a great generic) from both above (heavenly, God energy, divine universal etc.)  and below (earth, Goddess energy, Gaia etc.) through your head (above energy) and your feet (below energy) to meet inside you and go down your arms through the broom, stopping at the fat part of the bristles not spilling out the end– now sweep your space clear of all negative and positive energy while saying:

I clear this space in preparation of a sacred rite. This space is balanced and open for my workings this nite.

Cast the Circle

Using the divine energy/light pulling technique from the previous section, pull energy from above and below into you and out through your hand (only one hand – right for righties, left for lefties) this time the energy is going to come out of your hand like a beam that you will use to outline your circle. See this beam of light (still generic white is fine) shine down to the ground and building a wall as you walk around your circle clockwise. This circular wall goes up in the sky forever and down into the core of the Earth – like a drinking straw going from the heavens above to the core of the planet.

Call Quarters (use ‘em if you got’em)

Face East and say: I call forth the element of Air from the Eastern Quarter; carry my thoughts that they might be heard.  Let my mind be clear and let my heart hear. Hail and Welcome.

Face South and say: I call forth the element of Fire from the Southern Quarter; fill my soul with a passion for life. Let my mind be clear and let my heart hear. Hail and Welcome.

Face West and say: I call forth the element of Water from the Western Quarter; let my emotions ring true with compassion & tolerance. Let my mind be clear and let my heart hear. Hail and Welcome.

Face North and say: I call forth the element of Earth from the Northern Quarter; keep me flexible yet strong for the road is long. Let my mind be clear and let my heart hear. Hail and Welcome.

Call the God & Goddess

Say: I call upon the young Sun King, bring forth the stamina and courage to endure the trials ahead. Hail and welcome. (when you are doing this, visualize a young man who is fit, in the prime of his life, has great strength, courage and is standing ready to take on the problems of the world)

Say: I call upon our Mother Earth, grant blessings of abundance, health and compassion to endure the trails ahead. Hail and welcome  (when you do this, visualize a loving Mother Nature like woman, who is pregnant with new life, so alive and caring, flowers bloom from her every step)

State your Intent

Take a few deep breathes, relax in the energy for a moment, take your time, everything is perfect. Think about what you are going to do next. Change these words if they don’t seem right. It’s just a suggestion. You know why you are here - write it down and read it out loud, or speak it from memory. Here’s a generic one:

I am here tonight in a personal display of strength and support for myself and for my country.  I understand that I am not alone, and that together great things can and do happen. I am here to continue forward on a path for change.  I find it is time for a major change in my life and my country, and I am offering my support to this great work.

Get the candle, the oil and dirt. Mix your oil with small amounts of your home dirt.  As you are mixing, think about your home, your country and the world you want to live in, changes you want to see happen, create a imagine in your head of your great life as a citizen of the United States of America.

Using your fingers, coat the candle in your oil/dirt mixture (index finger and thumb) – do half the candle pulling fingers towards you to bring support to you and do the other half pulling outward away from you giving it to the rest of us.

While coating your candle repeat:

We have great problems to overcome, but together anything is possible.  I’ll do my part: I am counting on you to do yours.  Give our leaders the wisdom to decide what is best, and the courage to see it done.

Place the candle in its holder, light the candle and as you light the candle, bring back the visualization of a better country/world and say So mote it be.

(this candle must burn out. But you can continue finishing the ritual and leave the candle burning (just NEVER unattended) if your candle happens to be a vanilla jar candle, a 7 day, 3 wick or some other large long burning candle, please feel free to blow it out after the ritual when you have to and start it up again later, but it is best to burn the candle as quickly as possible to get the spell out into the universe but remember NEVER burn a candle unattended)

Release the God & Goddess

Say: To our Sun King and our Mother Earth, I thank you and release you from this rite, stay if you will, go if you must. Hail and fair well.

To our Four Quarters always standing strong and true, I thank you and release you from this rite, stay if you will, go if you must. Hail and fair well.

Stand at the East again, hold out your hand into that wall of light we used to create our circle, as you walk the circle counter clockwise, imagine the wall going back up into your hand, back into your body and then back up and down again to its place.

Now let me explain so we are all on the same page, when you light that candle in your circle (the drinking straw space you created from the core of our planet to the heavens) the thoughts, images and feelings you use, have or experience while you are putting that oil mixture onto that candle will be released up and down into the earth and heavens.

So with so many of us doing similar types of rituals within the same 24 hour period prior to the inauguration, we can create an “air” of change that will ripple into our lives. There will be energy that is charged with our hopes and dreams for the next four years. And if you participated in the service day on the 19th and did one act of community service, you will have acted upon this change and helped start us all on a path for some great works!

And a quick note about burning the candle (NEVER unattended) after the ritual, again just so we are on the same page – it is my thought that since the candle was lit in the sacred space and sacred space was closed with the candle still lit, relighting the candle will continue the working as if still in the circle.  If you don’t agree or think that’s crap– use a candle that will burn out while you wait in circle meditating on the change you want to see happen, your part in that change, your hopes and dreams for the next 4 years etc, do some energy raising, drumming or dancing while you wait.

Again, this is a generic, below beginner level ritual to be completed simply and easily.  Modify as you will!

Thank you for joining us in this historic event.

Namaste from your Pagan Pride Detroit Team

Crystal Pathways, FOCAS, Pagan Center, Practickal Magick, Motorcitypagans.net, OakMoon Coven & the Circle of the Sacred Grove

There can be no community without you!

This is a little something I wrote awhile ago, probably when I was sitting, bored, in a meeting somewhere.  It's not the BEST I've written, but...

The tune is "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer"

Jayne Cobb the Mercenary

You know Mal, Wash and Zoe, and Simon, and Kaylee,
River, and Book, and Inara (just maybe).
But have you caught sight
Of the fearsome Serenit-ite?

Jayne Cobb the Mercenary,
Has a lot of shiny guns.
They're used for all his thinking;
Vera is his favorite one.

Most of his life has been spent
Doing things that ain't so good.
One job, went south, made Jayne Cobb
Goram Mudder "Robin Hood"!

Then one day, off Ariel,
Captain whacked his skull;
Jayne Cobb stuck in airlock tight,
Traitor got an awful fright.

While Jayne is still annoying,
Not completely gone straight-laced,
Jayne Cobb the Mercenary,
Keeps himself from getting spaced!

NOTE: handling hot peppers, as well as the reduction sauce created from the peppers, can be hazardous! it is HIGHLY recommended that you use rubber gloves, and preferably a mask, when working with the peppers and sauce. DO NOT allow any part of your bare skin to come into contact with the sauce!
*

Ingredients - Reduction Sauce
20 Habanero peppers
20 Scotch Bonnet peppers
(I like the flavor combination of these two peppers; you can use different proportions, even all of one pepper, if you wish)
1/2 C white onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 C water
1/4 C distilled white vinegar
1/4 C malt vinegar

Wearing gloves, carefully slice the peppers, separating the seeds and pith (the white "ribs") from the colorful flesh of the peppers.  Set the flesh aside - we want just the seeds and pith for this part.  Finely chop the seeds and pith.
Place the onion and garlic into a pot; set the heat to medium-high.  Stir in the chopped pepper seeds and pith.  As the pot heats up, add the water and vinegars.  (Add the liquid before the onions and garlic begin to brown!)
Stir well to combine the ingredients.  Continue stirring as the sauce begins to boil.  When it starts to thicken, reduce the heat to low, and allow the sauce to thicken further.  Continue to cook until the volume is reduced to between 1/4 to 1/2 cup.  Test with a metal spoon - the sauce is ready when it coats the spoon.
Remove from heat.  While still warm, strain the sauce, to remove solids.  Cool completely.

Ingredients - Marinade
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
8 oz (1 jar) Tabasco sauce
1 Tbs Spanish paprika
1/2 tsp Chinese hot oil (or substitute a pepper-infused vegetable oil)
Habanero and Scotch Bonnet peppers from above, finely chopped
Reduction Sauce (see above)

Combine all ingredients; mix thoroughly.

Ingredients - Chili
1 lb stewing beef, cut into 1-inch cubes
Marinade (see above)
2 Tbsp flour

Trim fat from beef and save.  Marinate the beef in the refrigerator for 12-48 hours - longer is better.
Place beef and marinade in a pot or dutch oven, over low heat, for 2 hours.  Stir occasionally to keep meat from sticking to the bottom.  (The beef will probably break apart during this process - this is good.)
While the beef is stewing, rend the fat to liquid in a frying pan over low heat, to use in a roux.  (If the beef was too lean to produce 2 Tbsp liquid fat, lard or bacon grease may be used instead.)  Mix thoroughly with flour.
After the beef has cooked for 2 hours, remove from heat and strain all juices. Slowly add the liquid to the roux, blending thoroughly with a whisk.  Pour sauce back into pot and blend with the meat.
Transfer to serving bowl.

Makes 4 servings

Each helping should be served with a wedge of fresh lime (to be squeezed over the chili) and a large dollop of sour cream (to cool off the tongue).  A piece of bread, particularly flat bread or cornbread, can also help cut the heat.

Yes, I have a blog.
Yes, I will be updating it relatively frequently. (That is, "relative to how often I update it right now" - which isn't often.  I'll get better, I promise!)

About me: nope, that's going to be the next post.  (I'm at work, and can't even focus on what I'm supposed to be doing, much less post here...)

I'll update tonight.  Or maybe tomorrow.  Some time in the next few days, at least.  Or later this week.  I'll get to it!

Who am I? Why am I here? [Jan. 1st, 1970|12:01 am]

[Current Location |in my head]

[Current Music |Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Pink Floyd)]

Why am I here?

No, this is not the old cliche - I'm not questioning my existence.  What I mean is, "why did I start this blog?"

That requires an answer in two parts: first, a short description of who I am (or, at least, who I seem to be); second, my reasons for posting stuff here, as opposed to on MySpace, or some other type of "social networking" site.

For the first part, answering the question of "Who am I?"

From my bio: I am a
polyphasic-sleeping cyber-pagan web developer browncoat hacker potterhead gourmet cook card-playing father of two... and husband of one.  I describe these aspects in order, below, but in general, this blog will mostly focus on the "hacker" and "cyber pagan" aspects, with bits of
"polyphasic sleep" and "gourmet cook" (and maybe the other stuff) thrown in for flavor.

I practice "Polyphasic sleep" (look it up).  My schedule, when I keep it, is a variation of the "uberman" method; I sleep for a couple of hours at night (usually go to bed between 1:30 and 2:00am, and wake between 4:00 and 4:30am), and take several naps of 20-30 minutes each, about every 5-6 hours, during the day.  I spend a total of around 4 hours sleeping every 24 hours... which gives me 20 hours of "productive time", compared to most peoples' 16 hours.  (I put that in quotes because my wife and I don't always agree on what defines "productive"...)
I'd heard about polyphasic sleep a few years ago, but didn't really look into it until last winter.  There weren't enough scientific studies that showed it works, but the anecdotal evidence was pretty convincing, and I figured I'd give it a shot.  So, in early January (this being 2008), I drastically modified my sleeping pattern.  The first few days were difficult - I'd find myself drifting off at my desk, unsure what I'd been doing for the previous several minutes.  After about 4 days of this, my body began to adjust... but my brain still had a bit to go.  My physical needs were taken care of, but strange things would drift across my vision, only to disappear when I tried to look at them.  The hallucinations (if that's what they were) lasted a few more days, but after that, my brain and my body were fully adjusted.  A lot of the stories I'd heard indicated that it should take longer, like two to four weeks, to adjust.  I'd done it in just over one week.  I worried at first that there would be some strange side affect, something I wasn't aware of, but nothing like that manifested.  Looking back, I figured that my meditation (which I've been doing off-and-on for 20 years, but consistently since summer of '07) may have helped me to adjust faster.  Or, maybe my old insomnia helped to prepare my brain.  Whatever it was, I'm here now, so it must have worked.

I'm a practicing "Cyber Pagan".  I've heard several comments/questions regarding this, so I might as well address them here.
"Oh, Pagan, that means you worship Satan, right?"  Um... no.  Most *real* pagans don't believe in the Judeo-Christian concept of "Satan" (or whatever name you give it); those that do, generally do NOT worship or pray to it.  I researched the Church of Satan (Anton LeVey, etc.), a couple of decades ago, but don't follow their beliefs.  I also looked into several "Satanic cults", but found that all were some sort of sham ("tell 'em what they want to hear"), scam ("tell them Satan needs their money"), or front (that one was dealing drugs behind the black curtain, so to speak).  In any case, that is not who I am.
"Pagan? You mean Wiccan! I know *all* about that!"  Invariably, no, they didn't.  If they knew "all about" Wicca, then they'd know that not all Pagans are Wiccans.  There is a rather distinct difference here - it's like saying "All Christians are Baptists", or "All Moslems are Shi'ite".  There are many who would strongly (and sometimes violently) disagree with those statements.  Yes, Wiccans are Pagans... but not all Pagans are Wiccan.
I'm Pagan, but I'm not Wiccan.
"Cyber Pagan; so you do your rituals in chat rooms, right?" or, "Then you allow people to bring cellphones to rites?"  No, that would be "Techno-Pagan" - Pagans who permit the use modern technology in ritual.  While, yes, "technically" (heh) I could consider myself a "Techno-Pagan", that term is, to me at least, too limiting.  I *have* participated in online rites.  I *do* bring my cellphone (although I generally turn it off, unless there's a reason to be interrupted mid-rite).  But that isn't *all* I use technology for.
As a "Cyber Pagan", I *incorporate* technology into my beliefs and rituals.  My *athame* is a cordless high-temp soldering pen.  I don't see auras, I feel electromagnetic energy fields.  To me, all things are connected, in a vast electronic circuit - problems occur due to shorts, improper voltage, low (or high) currents, and out-of-phase cycles.

I'm a "Web Developer".  Technically, "Web Application Developer".  Slight yet significant difference.  I create applications (mostly .NET) that run on a website (internal or internet), and that typically utilize back-end databases (generally MS-SQL, sometimes Oracle, mySQL, etc....)  I'm not a Designer - I can create an app to someone else's specs, but my creative talents are more virtual than visual.

I'm a "Browncoat".  In short, I'm a fan of the Firefly television series, as well as the movie Serenity.  For a longer description, see the various websites (
in particular, http://browncoats.com/) which describe us.

I'm a "Hacker".  I do not (no longer, at least) crack security encryption, passwords, etc.  I do, however, hack hardware.  Give me a device - mechanical, electronic, wooden... anything that can be taken apart, can be put back together... better than it was.... (or, sometimes, just different than it was....)

I'm a "Potterhead".  That is, I'm a fan of Harry Potter.  My wife (and myself, sorta) has a "Wizard Rock" band, called Hut-on-the-Wrock.  Check *us* out at
http://www.myspace.com/hutonthewrock (I mostly just do lyrics, but I'm working on other stuff as well....)

I'm a "Gourmet Cook".  I don't do simple, when it comes to cooking.  Even a hamburger takes on a new dimension when I fire up the grill.  Note that I do NOT claim to be a Chef - those guys simply amazing.  However, I can enter just about any kitchen, rummage through the fridge/freezer/pantry, and come up with some rather tasty dishes... no matter what.  (Well, there has to be SOME food to be found....)

I'm "Card-Playing".  I play Black Jack and Poker.  By that, I mean to say, I win money at blackjack and poker.  I've been playing BJ here and there for (omg) 18 years, ever since a college professor (math) turned me on to it.  I've only really been playing poker for a few years - I used to play nickel-dime ante with friends, but have moved up to larger stakes (usually at casinos).  I like it, not just because it's fun, but because I'm good....

I'm a "Father of Two".  I have two lovely daughters, Morgen, 6 years old, and Liana, 3.
Morgen looks quite a lot like her mother did at the same age; we even fool relatives, when we show pictures of Courtney's youth.  The kid is incredibly intelligent - and that's not (just) a proud father talking.  On a recent "standardized test" (NWEA MAP), she scored in the 98th percentile for reading, and 84th percentile for math.  She's even read Harry Potter!  Morgen is also one of the kindest kids I've known - she immediately befriends anyone new that enters her life, whether it's a new classmate, or a substitute teacher, or adult friends of her various relatives.  If she sees that a kid is being left out of something, for whatever reason, she makes a special effort to include him/her, or even stops whatever she's doing with her friends to go sit/talk/play with the other kid.
Liana takes after me, in more than just looks (poor kid).  She's brave, brash, bold... "active" doesn't begin to describe her level of energy.  She seems fearless, particularly when she's focused on getting something that has caught her eye.  Unfortunately, she doesn't think of the consequences of her actions (such as injury, or punishment), or if she does, it's generally too late.  But it also seems that injuries are something that other kids endure - she has fallen (she would say "jumped") from a 4-foot high porch to hard concrete, only to immediately rebound to her feet and proclaim "I'm okay!", and go running off on whatever errand she had in mind.  She is precocious, in that she feels fully within her rights to be playing - hard - with the bigger, older kids... and doesn't understand when they don't want to play with her.

I'm a "Husband of One
".  One rather beautiful, intelligent, loving, witty, beautiful (did I already say that) wife.  Courtney and I have been together for a bit more than 11 years (as of this post), and have been married for just shy of 9.5 years.

Okay, that's me, in a nutshell (kinda like the Universe).

Why am I here?

As for why I'm doing this blog; as stated above, it's pretty much for the Hacker and Cyber-Pagan parts of Who I Am, although I'll throw in other stuff occasionally (like the Supernova Chili recipe I posted the other day).  I don't feel that MySpace is a strong enough venue for some stuff I want to talk about, and I haven't updated my LiveJournal
blog (or was it Facebook?) for so long, I don't even remember the password...  This one gets the more-serious, less-hokey stuff, and I'll keep the goofy rants on MySpace.  (Although I am reserving the rite to rant all I want, here, too.)

That's it!  Leave me a message, PM, IM, find me on Twitter, whatever.  As I stated (nearly a year ago) on MySpace, if you have any questions, just ask.  If I can, and it doesn't cause harm to others, I'll answer honestly.  (If I can't answer, I'll let you know that, too... and usually tell you why I can't answer....)
